pH Matter Awarded Funding to Manufacture Critical Fuel Cell Materials

March 19, 2024 – pH Matter is happy to announce it was selected for $7.2 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy Fuel Cell Technologies Office as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding.  The co-operative agreement will build on pH Matter’s catalyst technology advancements to scale products for the heavy-duty transportation market, and hydrogen generation.  Hydrogen fuel cells are an important zero-emissions technology for transportation and long duration energy storage.  Hydrogen can be generated by off-set renewable energy to create a valuable product and to balance electricity generation with demand.  Catalysts are a critical component for both fuel cells and electrolyzers to ensure good efficiency and durability.  DOE is funding the project to improve the domestic manufacturing base for catalysts, as these materials are the highest value component, and critical to sustainable energy sources.  In recent work, pH Matter has demonstrated industry-leading catalyst materials for heavy-duty fuel cells.

pH Matter is working with several industrial partners on the project, including heavy-duty fuel cell manufacturer Hyzon, fuel cell developer Giner Labs, electrolyzer manufacturer Power to Hydrogen, and additional OEM end users.  Academic partners on the project include Carnegie Mellon, Florida A&M, and Lorain County Community College.  The team will also be supported with public outreach by the Ohio Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Coalition.
